Decent pastries, for Pete's sake
Is there anything more depressing than a limp croissant? Politics, maybe, but otherwise, no. My pastries standards are high. Not so high that I'm in a constant state of dissatisfaction, but high enough that hitting the mark is rare. Essence Bakery here in Phoenix is the rare joint that fulfills on its promises without too much showmanship. If you want an excellent pastry, they've got you covered. In this weary world, all you can ask for is a reliably faithful croissant. And by god do they know how to cook an egg, to boot. A rare oasis of civility and consistency.
